Hi Bark Ave Staff!
I just wanted to send all of you a HUGE THANK YOU!
About a month & a half ago I woke up and grabbed my Yorkie, Winston, and walked across the street to the dog park conveniently located in front of my building. It was a normal morning... I had no make up... not a single hair had been brushed... and I was still wearing the clothing that I had slept in. As we made our way back to my building I spotted a gorgeous little white (but very dirty) dog just standing on the sidewalk without an owner in sight. As a pedestrian headed toward him he fearfully ran into the street, with gasps coming from everyone who saw. Fortunately he was not hit by oncoming traffic & he quickly jumped back to the sidewalk and headed down another street. Normally I would have said a quick prayer for the dog and been on my way, but this one was different.
Winston and I followed him down the street & watched as others tried to help him. I decided to get Winston on the case & we successfully lured him over to us, where I then grabbed him. Not knowing what to do with him or where to take him, I decided to get some help from my neighborhood doggie gurus... Bark Ave! I walked in with this mangy, scabby and dirty dog and you guys gave me a hot tip on where to take him. But on top of that (I`m sorry I don`t know his name) a tall man who was working with other dogs (I think he has dreads?) planted a thought in my head, to possibly hold onto him and see him through the restoration process; and suggested that if I were to keep him I could come back and get a free wash! I left with information and an idea... oh... and you also provided me with a leash, because my arms were dead after carrying him!
After taking him to a nearby shelter and deciding NOT to leave him there with a luck of the draw that he MIGHT get adopted and the vet MIGHT NOT find anything wrong with him and put him down; back to Bark Ave we went and you guys lavished him with love and soap and water! When I got back to pick him up I was in shock at how beautiful he truly was. I decided to hold onto him and help him get better before putting him up for adoption to a trusted friend. After taking him to Winston`s vet, I discovered that he is actually a puppy! Only 6 months old, he was a survivor and had nothing but love to give. Restoring him was a process, as he was attached to me constantly and would cry whenever I would leave him. One neighbor complaint and a few nights stuck at home later... I had an idea.
After a month and half I am happy to report that he is a part of great family... MINE! and has become the play partner to a gorgeous 7 year old Labrador named Sable. My parents adopted him and have showered him with love, security, stability and affection. He now lives on over an acre of land near the ocean, with plenty of grass, dirt and even bunny rabbits to chase around. He sleeps on his own bed in one of the bedrooms upstairs in their house along with his sister, Sable. He is completely healed of all of his sores, thanks to some good medicine from my vet. He is full of puppy energy and spunk and has come a LONG way from the mean streets of downtown LA. He is happy and healthy and loving life in his forever home!
I just wanted to say thank you to all of you guys for your advice, your service and your dedication to our neighborhood dogs. You are a tremendous help to all of us who live downtown and I for one am so grateful that you were open early and full of helpful tips for someone who woke up to find a gift outside of my building. `Atticus` would be grateful to you as well... if his thought process was like mine! So keep doing what you do... not only are you helping dogs... but you are helping us humans as well! Here is a photo of Atticus and Sable at home!
Grateful,
Sarah M.
